Slut Shaming: The act of making any person feel guilty or inferior for certain sexual behaviors or desires that deviate from traditional gender expectations.
I am so sick of hearing the word “slut” used so casually around school, as if we’re talking about Algebra homework.
I hear my friends call other girls derogatory terms to shame them at least 5 times on a daily basis. It’s probably more, but I’m beginning to become oblivious to it.
Why should girls stop calling each other sluts?
The list could go on and on but I’ll just give you a few reasons.
If girls call each other sluts then that only justifies boys calling us sluts. I don’t know if you’ve ever been called a slut by a guy before, but I have, and even if you know you’re not one, it still hurts just as much.
Girls, please stop referring to yourself as a “slut”, too, because you’re not. Instead of saying “Don’t slut shame me,” how about we do not refer to ourselves as sluts.
No matter how many guys you date, or what you’ve done with those guys, you are not a slut. You are not dirty, and you are not ruined. You are still beautiful and deserving of better nouns than that one.
This word is gross and unnecessary. This word is so many things, but this word is not you.
I’m not being an advocate for promiscuous actions, either, because it’s only high school. Try to focus on building meaningful relationships and more importantly, friendships because in my two years here I’ve learned that you need good friends by your side.
My point is that calling a girl a “slut” is wrong because her business is exactly that; her’s and only hers.
It is not ours to poke at and get involved in. It is not ours to judge or label. Before calling a girl such a horrible name, please put yourself in her shoes.
Her choices were hers to make and unless they’re affecting you in some way, you have no right to be talking about them.
